The application for the permanent residence generally includes only the applicant, his/her spouse or common-law partner or conjugal partner 16 years or older and any unmarried children under 19 years. Children over the age of 19 may, in prescribed circumstances, be included as accompanying family members.

Applications for the Canadian permanent residence under Skilled Workers Class are initially filed inside the Canada through Centralized Intake Office – The Case Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Once it is approved, the application will be undergoing further process with an appropriate immigration office outside of the Canada that serves the country where the applicant can legally reside or the immigration office that serves the applicant's country of his/her own nationality.

The applicant needs not to travel Canada as part of immigration process. However, in some of the cases, familiarity with the landscape and the area of the intended destination can positively impact the assessment.

The applicant and his/her spouse (where applicable) will be generally required to travel to the immigration processing office and need to attend a selection interview. In most of the cases, the requirement for a spouse to participate in the selection interview can be waived. Specific posts require that accompanying dependent children over the age of 22 years attend the immigration selection interview.

The Canadian Government imposes income tax based on residency rather than his/her citizenship. It's therefore, possible to become a Canadian citizen and a non-resident for tax purposes. After becoming a permanent resident and before attaining citizenship, an individual would be required to pay the taxes on worldwide income to Canada.
